America's criminal justice system comprises several institutions: police, prosecutors, defense lawyers, the court (judges and jurors) and prisons. This system has gotten its fair share of media coverage during the pandemic, which only heightened a perception most Americans have fought to reconcile. The United States criminal justice system is made for different people, and there is no clear line where the scales of justice can be balanced as it relates to certain crimes. Many people wonder, is there any hope?

In February 2020, just before the start of the pandemic, Ahmaud Arbery was taking a jog. He entered a home under construction, which video images captured many joggers doing. However, being a black male created suspicion for three white men living in the neighborhood. The three white men decided to pick up their guns and chase Arbery with a pickup truck to question his intentions being in the area. They did not consider calling the police at the time because they had no knowledge that Arbery did anything wrong; hence their desire to ask him questions.
