For more than a decade our legal profession has considered how to ensure the legal landscape is more accessible to the general population. There have been several goals to close the gap, either by eliminating barriers that prevent people from understanding and exercising their rights, ensuring fairness for those who face financial and other disadvantages or increasing efficiencies that would deliver outcomes without waste or duplication.

Over the years, as technology has become more engrained into the legal profession and accessible to the general population, technology companies like Avvo, LegalZoom and Rocket Lawyer have looked to bridge the access to justice gap by focusing on a customer-oriented philosophy that targets groups like middle-class families and small business owners. Most consumers of these platforms have never hired a lawyer before.
