Former Chief Justice William J. “Tocco” Sullivan, who died earlier this summer, was a “breath of fresh air,” in the words of a former colleague, when he took the helm of the state’s high court at the dawn of the 21st century.

From the start, Sullivan aimed to demystify government’s least-understood branch for everyone from schoolchildren to fellow judges.
