The word “robe-itis” is not in any dictionary. Lawyers and judges, however, understand that the word describes a condition in which a judge feels entitled or better than others because he or she wears a robe.

Both Judge James Ho of the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals and Judge Elizabeth Branch of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals are stricken with serious case of robe-itis. Both have declared that they will not hire law clerks from Yale Law School because of what they view as pervasive “cancel culture” at the law school.
