We think it is high time that an ethics code be promulgated for the United States Supreme Court members. We can think of no good reason for these members of the judiciary to be the only jurists who are not held to a defined standard in their ethical conduct.

The fact that the members are bound by federal law and required to follow the Ethics in Government Act does not mean that they have, and, there is no one or thing that requires them to do so. The recent disconcerting revelations about significant gifts to Justice Thomas, financial windfalls to his and Chief Justice Roberts’ spouse and recent book deals by Justice Sotomayer and Justic Gorusch (whose publishers have appeared before the court) suggest that this is a widespread problem that begs for a solution.
