A Connecticut judge granted a bill of discovery seeking to find out if Yale University knew Dr. Burton Caldwell allegedly used his own sperm for artificial inseminations without patients' consent between 1974 and 1984.

The court ruled the scope of discovery is limited to ascertain if Yale committed medical malpractice, breach of contract or is vicariously liable for Caldwell's actions.

The plaintiffs, Nancy Rosen Huber and Maralee Hill, were both patients of Caldwell and agreed to artificial insemination. Caldwell was a reproductive endocrinologist in New Haven and believed to be affiliated with a Yale program.
