On January 12, 2025, the District of Connecticut lost one of its most dedicated jurists and citizens, Judge Jeffrey Alker Meyer. The loss of any sitting judge is a blow to the community; this one feels like so much more.

News reports of his death mention it occurred after “a long illness.” To those of us who practiced in front of him, it sure didn’t feel that long. It was only in 2023 that he began publicly sharing that he would be scheduling matters around his treatment for lymphoma. Just a year prior, his name was being whispered as a leading contender for the then-vacant seat at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. His career history spanned worlds with an impact still felt today, from establishing the United States Attorney’s Office appellate practice group to unmasking corruption as counsel to the Independent Inquiry Committee into the United Nations Oil for Food Program in Iraq.
