Editor’s Note: The Law Tribune wrote a lengthy profile of Chief Justice Ellen Ash Peters in 1995, from which this article is adapted. Peters left the court the following year, after reaching mandatory retirement age and authoring the majority opinion in the landmark Sheff v. O’Neil case that guaranteed Connecticut schoolchildren equal educational opportunities. Since her retirement, Peters has continued to serve as a senior judge.
