State lawmakers were none too happy in March when Gov. M. Jodi Rell nominated 10 white attorneys to become Superior Court judges. It was almost adding insult to injury at the time, because legislators still wrestling with a projected state budget deficit and were skeptical the state could afford 10 judges of any race or ethnicity.

Although nine of the nominees were ultimately confirmed by the General Assembly, legislators warned the governor that in the future, she should find some more diverse candidates.
