Middletown Superior Court Judge Patrick J. Clifford’s in-court joking during jury selection is not grounds for a new trial for a minister convicted in November of plotting to beat and kill the stepfather of basketball star Ray Allen, another judge has determined.

Clifford is the chief administrative judge for the Criminal Division, a seasoned jurist best known for finally authorizing serial killer Michael Ross’s execution in 2005. But during jury selection last year he engaged in playful banter with a prospective juror who, like Clifford’s wife, was in the real estate business.
