As a kid, Leigh A. Newman remembers racing to beat her mom to the Sunday New York Times so that she could fill in the handful of crossword puzzle answers she could figure out. By college, Newman spent her Sunday mornings at Princeton University doing the Sunday Times puzzle herself.

And as she got older, she continued to get better and better. She doesn’t remember exactly when, but at some point working crossword puzzles went from “something to do to something I became obsessed with.”
