That Stamford Superior Court Judge John Redmond Downey sang praise for U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond may not be the only subject of lawmakers’ grilling next week when his nomination to the state Appellate Court goes before the legislature’s Judiciary Committee.

In recent days, claims of other potentially inappropriate conduct by Downey have surfaced. On Sept. 11 of last year, according to a court transcript, Downey questioned Greenwich lawyer Brendon Leydon about the immigration status of his client in a vehicular wrongful death case, in a manner that immigration experts say is improper.
