Yale Law School student Deborah Marcuse knew Immigration Judge Michael Straus was growing short on patience. Straus was about halfway through 15 hearings for illegal immigrants caught in a recent raid in New Haven and was clearly weary of hearing the same arguments for reduced bond.

Still, Marcuse remained poised, stood straight, and succinctly told the court why her client’s bond should be only $3,000 instead of the $8,000 or so most of the other immigrants were getting.
