“No comment.” This seemingly innocuous phrase provides false comfort. It can give the speaker the illusion of thinking, “Well, that’s done with. We said nothing. The press has nothing, so the story’s dead.”
Unfortunately that couldn’t be further from the truth. Corporate clients who direct their legal counsel to remain silent under the assumption that a “no comment” will lead the reporter to drop the story haven’t dealt with many reporters.
