In the same month that shovels broke ground for a national monument honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., citizens of Michigan shoveled dirt on the grave of their commitment to racial dialogue and understanding. How soon we forget our promises.

Voters in Michigan went to the polls on Nov. 7, and passed Proposal 2 – a ballot initiative dubbed the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative. Proposal 2 amended the state’s constitution to prohibit all affirmative action in the public domain. By a 16 percent majority, citizens of Michigan outlawed programs for blacks, women and other racial minorities. The initiative affects university admissions policies, employment outreach and contracting opportunities.
