The American Civil Liberties Union was recently served with a federal grand jury subpoena demanding “any and all copies of a document marked ‘Secret,’ dated 12/20/05.” It had received the document, unsolicited, on Oct. 23, 2006.
The subpoena, having no apparent investigative purpose, was a clear attempt by the Bush Administration to kill two birds with one stone: (1) suppress what proved to be a mildly embarrassing government document, and (2) intimidate and impede the work of human rights advocates, such as ACLU, who seek to expose government wrongdoing.
