Market research has changed dramatically over the last half century. What was done through in-person interviews evolved into telephone polls then mail surveys and mall-based polling. With the Internet, however, it’s more of a science than ever before.

In 1994, the Westport company known as Greenfield Consulting Inc., formed a division to explore Internet polling. By 2001, it grew so successfully that the upstart online operation became the company’s new focus, as Greenfield Online, and the traditional consulting business was sold. Now based in Wilton, Greenfield Online developed the first online focus group technology, known as FocusChat.
