In the course of their jobs, the 6,000 employees of Metro-North Commuter Railroad Co. drive lots of vehicles besides trains, and the company needs to know their drivers’ licenses are valid and current.

In the past, employees produced their drivers’ licenses to show they were properly licensed. This fall, Metro-North had a new idea. The company sent letters to employees’ homes, asking them to sign away their privacy rights in state driver’s license databanks, on pain of possible firing if they didn’t comply.
