Justice Samuel Alito ruined Justice Stephen Breyer’s chance to be the junior justice with the longest tenure by three weeks. This brings to mind the suggestion of some legal scholars and politicians that there should be a constitutional amendment to provide either for one 18-year term or for mandatory retirement at age 75 for U.S. Supreme Court justices.
