New developments in lawyer marketing techniques recently reported in the legal press include the following:

• Total Cost, a Chicago-based web site, refers leads on potential clients to lawyers who pay a fee of $65 for each lead. Twelve Connecticut attorneys participating in the program were grieved (Zelotes v. Rousseau, et al., Grievance Complaint No. 09-0412) for violating the rules of professional conduct prohibiting payment for referrals. No problem, said the Statewide Grievance Committee. Total Cost did not actually “recommend” the lawyer’s services, so Rule 7.2(c) prohibiting such payments was not violated.
