From the Department of Corrections: I recently quoted Wernher von Braun in an article. I got the quote from the Internet, so I was sure it had to be correct. One of my two faithful readers wrote to point out that the quote attributed to von Braun—”I just design the missiles, I don’t care where they come down” — was actually attributable to songwriter Tom Lehrer who used it in one of his songs lampooning public figures. There was a funny article a few years ago about how teaching had become more difficult with the advent of computer-aided searching. It was called something like “No, the Vikings Did Not Come from Minnesota!”

From the Department of Good Books: Imagine that Watergate, the political scandal that cost Richard Nixon his presidency and sent more than a few lawyers to prison, was the result of several really stupid, banal and easily explained errors. Watergate, by Thomas Mallon, is historical fiction which uses the Watergate cast of characters and answers the lingering questions such as, why did very smart men risk everything for a third-rate burglary and what caused the 18-minute gap on the Oval Office tape? Some fun stuff in there too, like a reprise of Martha Mitchell’s antics and an intriguing subplot suggesting that Pat Nixon had a lover.
