Football is a fascinating sport with some very well thought out rules. One such rule which has always appealed to me is the forward progress rule, whereby the official blows the whistle to end the play if the defense stops the ball carrier’s forward progress and pushes him back substantially, even if the carrier isn’t downed. Significantly, the ball is placed not at the point to which the runner was driven back, but rather at the point where his forward progress was stopped.

I consider this a particularly well thought out and intelligent rule as it protects the ball carrier while recognizing the progress made.
