Scandalous as it was the other day when Coventry’s former fire chief was charged with having carried on sexually with an underage girl in the fire department’s junior firefighter program, impregnating her, and paying for her abortion, that wasn’t the big scandal. There always will be sexual abuse and public officials who abuse their trust.

No, the big scandal was barely noticed: that a minor girl was subjected not only to statutory rape but also to sexual assault by someone with authority over her, a separate criminal charge, and still was able to get an abortion with no questions asked, an abortion to conceal two crimes.
