New Haven attorney John R. Williams has never shied away from controversy. In part, that comes with the turf. Over 34 years, Williams has handled more than his share of high-profile criminal defense cases and brought numerous lawsuits claiming police misconduct and racial, religious and employment discrimination.

But now Williams is the target of criticism from an unexpected source — the U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeals. In a recent ruling, the judges had harsh words for Williams, adding that they did not find his actions surprising, "given his history of lawyering that falls below minimum standards before this Court and the district courts."
