In late 2005, a mother and her adult son from Westport walked into the Pawn King shop in Stratford. In need of quick cash, they did what thousands of people do every day. They handed over some old watches, bracelets and rings in exchange for a $400 loan.

Over the next few months, Bess Gilmore made five similar transactions at Pawn King and received total cash payments of $3,700. She entered into an agreement with shop owner William Mingione that her items would be returned after a month if she repaid the $3,700 in a “repurchase” transaction.
