I have been struck by the different reactions we have had to the deaths of young (and some not so young) men of color at the hands of the police in the last few months. Some, including some pretty thoughtful people, say that this is just the 21st-century version of lynching, and reveals deep-seated institutional bias against black men. Others view the events through the eyes of the police, and warn that these tragic outcomes are to be expected when citizens (of any color) don’t submit to lawful authority.

Not surprisingly, opinions tend to skew on the basis of racial affiliation or self-expression. Thus, two smart, well-educated people can view the same set of facts (or videotape) and see quite different things.
