It was the rare sexy case in land use legal circles. A big-time construction company owner from New York City bought a waterfront estate in a ritzy community in Old Saybrook and placed a pair of 5-foot-tall granite pillars at the driveway entrance. The town said the posts violated rules designed to protect the aesthetics of the historic neighborhood. The fact that Katharine Hepburn had owned the property for many years, and that it was valued at $30 million at one point, gave the saga an added buzz.

A four-year court battle raged. Officials in the Fenwick Historic District Commission said the pillars were a foot too high. The owner of the property, Frank Sciame, said they weren’t.
