An ambulance company volunteer cannot sue for workplace discrimination without showing she received some sort of remuneration, the Connecticut Appellate Court ruled on an issue of first impression.

Sarah Puryear, an African-American woman, filed a complaint with the state Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities, alleging that Echo Hose Ambulance in Shelton had illegally discriminated and retaliated against her. She was voted out of the company during a membership meeting.
