A long list of unwritten rules were broken in 1978, when Gov. Ella Grasso appointed Ellen Ash Peters to the Supreme Court.
Peters was not only the first woman appointed to the high court, she also was thrust ahead in the “line,” the lockstep advancement of the most senior judges, crowning their long careers.
