Virginia just joined Florida by adopting a rule that makes it an ethical violation for lawyers to grab firm files on their way out the door. Maybe we should do the same thing. It would save a lot of time and effort for everyone involved.

For as long as I can remember, and I am sure for a lot longer before that, there has been a practice where new (and not-so-new) lawyers work for a few years in a firm, developing client relationships and contacts, and then decamp to greener pastures with the client files and the firm rolodex. Now a days they also grab form files, prior work, case management software, contacts lists, and a bunch of other electronically stored files. I get calls about it all day, every day.
