Matthew Shafner, a New London lawyer who practiced law for 56 years, handling high-profile cases involving asbestos, maritime injuries and the Sept. 11 attacks, passed away on Sept. 3. He was 80 years old and had apparently been ill for several weeks.
Shafner has served for years as city attorney for Groton, but made his reputation mostly as a personal injury attorney, working the last seven years of his life for Suisman Shapiro. He received a Connecticut Trial Lawyers Association’s lifetime achievement award in 2013 and a Connecticut Law Tribune Personal Injury Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement award in 2014.
