For frustrated computer users, Click4Support seemed like a godsend. The company with offices in Essex, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania told consumers it was affiliated with Apple, Microsoft and other tech firms and offered to repair computers, upgrade security and provide technical support.

But the Connecticut Attorney General’s Office and Federal Trade Commission say the business was a scam, that Click4Support didn’t perform any worthwhile services and that consumers were cheated out of $17 million. Authorities have taken the aggressive step of going to federal court, where they received permission to shut down the company while enforcement action is pending.
