A lot had been written in these and other pages lately about bias. Everyone agrees that it is an insidious presence in our decision-making and should be guarded against, but I doubt few ever experience, up close and personal, how it can shape our perceptions and attitudes. Twice in my life I have been reminded of this.
Recently, my wife and I finished binge-listening to the “Serial” podcast which ran on public radio about a year ago. It explores a 15-year-old conviction in Maryland for the death of a high school girl who, the jury found, was strangled and killed by her boyfriend, Adnan Syed. Over 12 episodes, the reporter, Sarah Koenig, painstakingly examines the evidence, the trial, Syed’s lawyer’s performance and the accused’s claims of innocence. She did a good enough job that a hearing was recently held on whether there should be a new trial.
