Does an insurance policy cover you if you’re sued following a fistfight? In some cases, yes, according to a recent Connecticut federal court decision.

On Dec. 7, 2012, Benjamin Lassow was a member of the E.O. Smith High School hockey team, whose members were running on the outdoor track at the Mansfield school. Gregory Stearns and a handful of other students were watching the team practice. According to court documents, Lassow and Stearns “exchanged inappropriate words” and then Lassow crossed the track toward Stearns, ignoring the hockey coaches’ calls for him to stop.
