It was Michael Skakel’s request for a new trial that was on the line during a state Supreme Court hearing. But for much of the time it felt like two other people were on trial: defense attorney Mickey Sherman and Skakel’s brother, Thomas.

Michael Skakel was convicted in 2002 of killing his 15-year-old Greenwich neighbor Martha Moxley, who was bludgeoned and stabbed with a broken golf club in 1975. Skakel’s appellate attorney Hubert Santos told the justices that Sherman made multiple mistakes during the trial, with perhaps the biggest one being not pointing to Thomas Skakel as the likely culprit.
