Darnell Crosland is cloaked in an orange cape in the corner room of his downtown Stamford office. He had worked until 3 a.m. the night before on a case, only to wake a few hours later and start his busy schedule all over again. And so the attorney has asked his barber, Zack Lara, to make an office call.

Lara and Crosland have known each other since Crosland helped Lara draft legislation that allows for apprenticeship programs at barber shops in the state. That pro bono effort is only one of Crosland’s achievements. He’s more widely known as head of the Norwalk branch of the NAACP, and balances his civil rights advocacy with a criminal defense practice that currently has 50 to 100 open cases.
