A federal judge has dismissed the petition of two deported Italian immigrants who sought to enter the country and testify before the Connecticut legislature. U.S. District Judge Vanessa Bryant, concluding the court lacks jurisdiction, refused to overrule the decision by immigration officials to bar the deportees’ re-entry.
State lawmakers had wanted to hear directly from Arnaldo Giammarco and Paolina Milardo, both of whom lived in Connecticut for decades before being deported to Italy for nonviolent crimes committed years ago. Lawmakers have said they want to hear about the “impact of Connecticut criminal convictions on immigrant households affected by deportation or threat of deportation,” according to subpoenas issued by the Judiciary Committee.
