A New Haven-based attorney should have been given time to prepare for a formal hearing before a judge imposed a 20-day suspension on him, the state Appellate Court has ruled.

In 2014, Superior Court Judge Jon Blue suspended civil rights and criminal defense attorney John R. Williams following the trial of Angelo Reyes, who Williams had represented in an arson case. Blue imposed the suspension after scolding Williams for disclosing to the state jury that his client had previously been acquitted in a federal trial. The judge said he previously barred Williams from mentioning the federal verdict without permission.
