Some days are harder than others. The Connecticut Department of Children and Families, like so many other child welfare agencies across the country, is only in the news when things go badly for a child. Government is often being asked to solve society’s problems, raise everyone else’s children and move into people’s homes. Good news seldom travels and bad news travels at the speed of light. Every death of a child is heartbreaking and those that could have been prevented demoralizing.

There are many wonderful people I have come to know in my not-so-new position who work tirelessly to strengthen families, help them heal, educate our children, combat substance abuse, treat mental illness, tackle homelessness, and reduce poverty. Some days are better than others and some days I get the inspiration and resilience from the very children I am charged with protecting. Below is a letter from a wonderful young boy in the care of DCF who is in need of a kidney donation. Maybe you or someone you know could be his match. Please take a moment to read his letter below and thank you for your time.
