For attorneys of a musical bent or musicians of a legal bent, Rolling Stone magazine has posted transcripts of the direct and cross-examinations of one James Patrick Page, also known as Jimmy Page, the guitarist for the bands The Yardbirds and Led Zeppelin. The occasion was the trial in the copyright infringement lawsuit against Led Zeppelin and its music publishing company by two members of the band Spirit who wrote and performed the song “Taurus” back in the ’60s.

The infringement claim revolved around certain elements of Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven,” the band’s iconic rock mega-hit, specifically, the famous acoustic guitar introduction in the key of A minor along with some of the structural elements of the song. Among the allegations were that Page, who wrote “Stairway,” lifted the introduction and these structural elements from “Taurus.” Interestingly, Page was called as a witness by the plaintiffs as part of its direct case.
