To the Editorial Board:
Your “Making Our Streets Safe Again” editorial proposes an overly reactionary policy shift that is likely to do exactly the opposite. Connecticut, due to the joint efforts of the executive, judicial and legislative branches of government and the juvenile justice advocacy community, is locking up fewer young people in response to a wealth of research showing that mass incarceration provides no public safety benefit and may, in fact, encourage recidivism, and the crushing cost of incarceration, about $30 million annually to support a facility holding an average of 45 boys.
