With a company as large and significant as Cigna, it’s probably not surprising that it would take a comprehensive approach to its legal department in a number of ways. Although not surprising, it is impressive how thorough Cigna’s in-house department is when it comes to managing outside counsel and its pro bono work.

Cigna uses a “Fit for Purpose” method to help select and evaluate outside counsel, and has increased its use of RFPs and RFIs to assess outside firms to find potential fits for its legal needs. The in-house department also looks for blocks of work to assign to firms, focusing on savings and efficiency. In addition, Cigna uses software to evaluate outside firms’ performances.
