In the midst of increasing rate pressure from clients, law firms are rethinking how they staff client matters, rewriting job descriptions and ultimately reshaping law firm staffing models.

Consultants and lawyers said firms are experiencing change in paralegals’ roles, increased use of contract attorneys and the hiring of nonlawyer experts as permanent law firm staff. Clients are driving these decisions to various degrees, they said.
