The family of a Stamford police officer who died four-and-a-half years after she suffered injuries breaking up a fight between two middle school students is suing the department’s police chief and another city official for refusing to sign a document that would allow her family to receive federal death benefits and educational assistance.

The lawsuit filed in Stamford Superior Court on Tuesday asks the court to demand that Chief Jonathan Fontneau or Ted Jankowski, director of Stamford’s Department of Public Safety, Health and Welfare, sign off on the federal document. The documents would then be forwarded to the U.S. Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Assistance.
