Former Sen. Joseph Lieberman‘s appearance at the top of President Donald Trump’s short list for potential FBI directors has left Connecticut attorneys questioning whether he could bring a level of independence to the administration, or if he’s already shown himself too quick to placate the president.

Several attorneys, former prosecutors and law professors agreed that despite his age and lack of experience in intelligence circles, the 75-year-old New Haven native would command the respect of agents and be able to stand up to Trump. Whoever Trump picks, if confirmed, will fill the position left by fired FBI director James Comey.
