Billable work at many of Connecticut’s largest law firms took a steep slide in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, but largely recovered by the time October and November rolled around, firm managers say in hindsight.

Still, the economy’s continuing volatility has firms playing it safe, scouring their budgets for cost-savings — and, in some cases, trimming support staff positions through layoffs or others means.
