Some of the effects of 9/11 have been “backlash” incidents involving discrimination, harassment and violence in the employment setting that have been directed against individuals who are, or are perceived to be Arab, Muslim, Middle Eastern, South Asian or Sikh. This conduct was anticipated almost immediately after the September terrorist attacks, as reflected in President Bush’s statement to America a few days later that “We must be mindful that as we seek to win the war [against terrorism] we treat Arab-Americans and Muslims with the respect they deserve.” Similarly, on September 14th the EEOC Chair Cari Dominguez called for renewed sensitivity by employers and workers to the prohibitions against unlawful discrimination based on national origin, ethnicity and religion.
