At many jobs, there is someone who gets the work done in a manner unlike any other.
My friend, “The Snake,” was one of these people. Before we knew of his serpentine talents, The Snake wrangled a job as a library clerk at our newspaper. He swept the floor, he washed the walls, he found boxes of clippings that hadn’t been seen in decades. Then he painted the walls and established a filing system that would have made John Dewey smile. No one could outwork him. Soon, the Snake became a proofreader and then an editor. Eventually he moved from his tent to an apartment.
