About 27, or 2 percent, of the 1,200 collegiate athletic directors in the U.S. are black.
Ken McBryde of Connecticut College, the elite Eastern school near the Coast Guard Academy in New London, was one of those black A.D.s. A top administrator told McBryde he did not fit into the culture at this predominately white college. Others — including coaches — called him “nigger” and “spade” after he uncovered NCAA violations at the school. He got no support from the administration.
