Affymetrix Inc. employee Linda Ange inspects a finished gene chip at the company’s production facilities. Gene chips are dime-sized pieces of glass, infused with DNA fragments,that allow researchers to study how and why genes react to various stimuli. Industry leader Affymetrix, with estimates of up to 80 percent of the commercial market, shipped 280,000 gene chips last year.
